BOOK1
Evie Jordan arrives on Welshport Island from London to marry into the Lord family, a wealthy New England publishing dynasty. The Lords welcome her, but there are secrets that bubble just under the surface of their very glossy glamours demeanor; secrets that Evie's ship cabinmate whispered about on her way to America. The Lords consist of the matriarch Rebecca, her son Jacob, Jacob's daughter Charlotte, and Evie's husband-to-be Sebastian (Rebecca's grandson). Jacob's jealousy of his nephew Sebastian and ever-growing greed for total control of the family fortune leads him to plot a murder at the wedding by promising his daughter's estranged mother Mary more access to the girl if she carries out the killing on the wedding day. Mary reluctantly agrees and shoots Sebastian dead in front of the entire congregation. Ravaged by guilt and her stupidity, Mary seeks out the help of her reclusive mother Eliza to reverse what she's done by using her powers of magic. Eliza warns that the price of bringing someone back to life will be detrimental to the living in the end. Even so, Eliza and Mary reverse Sebastian's death by using blood from his friend Filipe Braga and bring Sebastian back to life as a vampire. When Jacob learns Evie is entitled to a hefty sum of the family fortune now that she is a full-fledged Lord, he and his co-conspirator Gaspar begin to gaslight Evie into thinking she is seeing Sebastian's ghost around the family mansion in hopes to drive her insane. Meanwhile, Sebastian's return has not gone well. His mind is darker, he's confused and while on the other side he has learned from the ghost of his mother Sabrina that Jacob was responsible for her death not his father as the rumors had been for decades. Sebastian vows to return to the family home and get revenge but Eliza and Mary warn there is no way he can do this as someone who now lives in the shadows. Elsewhere, Evie grows closer to village Constable Christian Evans and their friendship becomes romantic in her mourning. Despite Jacob's attempts, Christian doesn't believe Evie is going mad and promises to help her prove Jacob is the one pretending to being Sebastian's ghost. Jacob suggests Evie has lost her mind even further now that she's involved with Christian so soon after Sebastian's death. This ploy works on convincing his uber pious mother Rebecca that Evie is not in her right state and Rebecca signs papers proclaiming Evie mad. The young widow is then removed form the mansion and sent to a mental institution to be locked away for life, leaving Jacob in total control of the Lord family empire.
